Fullness in the belly, a string-bend melody spinning, a natural dryer laying down the bass, the night seeping into the cobblestone lane, plunging toward the shallow bed of a pond and a line of people at rapid speed. Against an oil-painted backdrop, lisianthus slowly wilting, the electric fan fallen still, and suddenly the only thing left in my ears is the slight discomfort of noise-cancellation, along with the lingering voices, footsteps, whistling sounds.

Pulling out of a winding, dim parking lot, the windshield suddenly claimed by raindrops, I came to stand beneath the feet of countless concrete giants. I followed the trailing resonance of a strummed chord and kneaded my unease into an imaginary snowball, then hurled it with all my strength toward the gray-white sky.
In the distance, a sudden orange-red arc sliced through from between the clouds, and the glass of the buildings nearby shattered in an instant into rippling, glinting fragments. I watched the setting sun shine with arrogant intensity, the stratocumulus looking down indifferently at the raindrops and at us. A saturated timbre that seemed to pierce in from nowhere pushed tears from my eyes, slowly, slowly, slowly, until I caught sight of an ambulance flashing blue through the car window as it swept past, and then the bass string shuddered violently, and my heart couldn’t stop trembling.
